Loving the way one should love.

Novelist and poet D. H. Lawrence called himself the priest of love. And that’s the title of a 600-page biography of Lawrence. Which I’m reading with great interest. Because I like the stuff that Lawrence wrote. Beautiful stuff. Great insights. About love. The concept. The practice. But seems to me that Lawrence was a difficult guy to live with. That he didn’t necessarily practice what he preached. Maybe he wasn’t such a good lover. In practice. Though I’m not certain what it takes or what it means to be a good lover. In his fiction, Lawrence tries to tell us. What love is. And what love isn’t. Seems to me that Lawrence understood love theoretically. But that doesn’t mean that he lived his theory.  I have theories, too. About love.Actual concepts. They keep evolving. Never static. I’m always trying to get it right. In practice. That’s the real challenge. Loving the way one should love. –Jim Broede
