Old maids, so to speak. Sad, isn't it?
Many years after I left, I returned to the town where I grew up and went past the house in which we lived. And it was hard for me to believe how small the house was. Much smaller than what it seemed like when I lived there. The name of the street was River Lawn Avenue. Yes, we lived at 132 River Lawn Avenue. The houses across the street were on the Rock River. And the nearest intersecting streets were Duffy Street and Ruth Street. And the schools were within easy walking distance. And we had a noon-time break from school, and walked home for lunch. Interesting memories. And I can still remember the names of my grade schoool teachers. Miss Barganz in the first grade. Miss Rose in the second grade, Miss Wiegel in the third grade, Miss Bredow in the fourth grade, Miss Kirchoff in the 5th grade and Mr. Checota in the 6th grade. So many grade schoool teachers in those days were single. Old maids, so to speak. Sad, isn't it? --Jim Broede
