I see that in my little niche of the world, the local Wal-Mart will be open 24 hours today. Thanksgiving Day. Yes, we have so much to be thankful for in America. The fact that we can go shopping. Even on a holiday. At any time of day or night. --Jim Broede

American capitalism. Isn't it wonderful? --Jim
Yes it is also wonderful to know, if I need medication or food in the middle of the night, or if I work certain hours, that I can shop when I need to. We have quite a few stores open 24/7. Why not?
Yes, one must never cease admiring the wonders that capitalism has wrought. The opportunity to shop at any time. Yes, one of life's essentials. Certainly, that's more essential than universal health care. We certainly have our priorities straight. --Jim
Oh, it wasn't clear, that you were comparing one over the other. Sounded like you were just writing about Walmart. Years ago, we didn't have more than one shift of workers. Everybody went home at 5pm, every day. Didn't work weekends either. Problem was, so did the store owners, the pharmacists, the doctors, dentists, etc. You see, everyone is not able to be retired, as you seem to be, and conduct their business during daylight hours.
Yes, I think it is wonderful, wonderful.
I was in Italy recently. And they close shop on holidays. And every day to some extent. It's not unusual to close early in the afternoon. And open later in the day. Some cultures believe in a more leisurely paced living. Sort of like we're all retired. Sounds rather humane to me. Beats the American rat race. Vive le Italia. --Jim
So what? That's another country; another culture. I could find something to like in every country. Go live there, if you don't like it in the U.S.
I've been there too, nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there. Probably good for someone your age.
And as many of you know, I pretty much do as I damn well please. --Jim
I like to live in many, many places. Don't mind splitting my time between Minnesota and Italy and Germany and Britain. --Jim
I find Italy delightful for people of all ages. --Jim
And when it comes to living in America, I highly recommend Minnesota. But not Texas. Or hell. Come to think of it, it's all one and the same. --Jim
So, you have something against an entire state!?!?
Texas is my least favorite state. I think of it as hell. Especially the Panhandle. Don't even want to visit. Let alone live there. Maybe it's that George Bush tainted the state. I'm sure Texans don't want me, either. Which makes me feel blessed. --Jim
Texas, by the way, leads the universe in executions. They love to kill people down there. --Jim
The governor of Texas recently proposed that his state secede from the union. If only America could be so lucky. --Jim
