We are choosing disaster.
If one listens to economist Paul Krugman, we are living the year 1938 in 2010. Yes, 72 years ago, America was still trying to pull itself out of the Great Depression. And some wanted to spend huge amounts of money on stimulus. To revive the economy. But there wasn't the political will to do it. Instead, conservatives advocated austerity programs. Spending less. Cutting taxes. Tightening our belts, so to speak. When what was needed was stimulus, stimulus and more stimulus. But it wasn't gonna happen until World War II happened along. And we as a nation started spending like never before. We ran up the equivalent of a $30 trillion debt to fight the war. And in essence, that stimulated the economy like it was never stimulated before. By accident. Good gawd. What a stroke of luck. But now we have no looming war. No or little prospect for stimulus. And grand old stupid America may go down the tubes. Into oblivion. All because the conservatives will hold sway. And we won't spend our way out of deep economic trouble. We need stimulus. We need jobs. We need spending that rivals that of the World War II era. But we ain't gonna get it. Because we Americans want to play life safe. And the irony is that playing it safe will be downright dangerous. The wrong thing. We're gonna reject the solution of Obama and the liberals. And we are gonna put our trust in conservatives and the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party. We are choosing disaster. --Jim Broede
