Is it for real or another hoax?
Not sure that I buy into the philosophy of the Chicago Cubs. That a baseball team has to be truly bad before it can be truly good. No doubt, it’s an interesting concept. And it might work. But I suspect it’s a bit extreme. The Cubs have dismantled a long mediocre team. To make it very bad. Last season, the Cubs lost 101 games. Nearly the most losses ever for a team that dates to the late 1800s. And it won’t surprise anyone if the Cubs lose even more games in 2013. The aim is to rebuild the Cubs. From the bottom up. With young ballplayers that won’t be ready to play real good baseball until maybe 2015. They’ll rise gradually through the minor league system. And then be supplemented with a handful of top-notch free agents. Blending into a world-beater team. A winner of the World Series. A feat the Cubs haven’t achieved since 1908. Who knows? Maybe it’s the winning formula. Or maybe it’s merely a bogus marketing tool. Selling naive Cubs fans another bill of goods. Instead of waiting ‘til next year, wait until two years after next year. Only to find out you’ve been duped once again. –Jim Broede
