Easier said than done.

Generally, I try to be objective. When formulating my opinions. About the nature of life. And reality. But often, I find that impossible. Especially in matters of the spirit and religion.  Because then I allow my emotions to hold sway. I become subjective. By believing what I want to believe. Without objective truth. Might as well. After all, some stuff cannot be proved. Beyond a doubt. Therefore, one must make the leap. Into the realm of subjectivity. When I speak of my spirit and my soul and the afterlife, it’s mostly wishful thinking. When I was being educated, as a young man, my teachers encouraged me to be objective. About my perceptions of reality. To always seek the truth. To do the right thing. But I soon discovered that grasping the truth isn’t easy. It’s often elusive. In forming opinions on political, social and economic issues. And in forming judgments about people. All too often, one drifts into subjectivity and away from objectivity. As a journalist, and especially as a human being, I’ve tried to be fair in an objective manner. But that’s easier said than done. Unfortunately, as a society, we seem to be more subjective than objective. --Jim Broede
