Now I demand success.

I get a little irritated. With my baseball team. The Chicago Cubs. For playing lackadaisical baseball. Especially against the bad teams. I’m rather demanding, of course. After all, the Cubs are in first place. At the moment. With the best record in the National League.  But since the All-Star game break. The Cubs have played only .500 baseball. Splitting their 18 games. Little wonder. That they are in danger of falling out of first. Maybe baseball is becoming too easy, too laid-back for the Cubs. They seem to lack a killer instinct. They play down to their competition. It wasn’t that way. In 2017. When the Cubs won the World Series.  Maybe. As a fan. I’ve become spoiled. I want more effort. By the way. I call the Cubs my team. As if I’m the owner.  Because that’s the way it should be. I adopted the Cubs. When I was a kid. I accepted failure. By the Cubs. For a long, long time. Now I demand success. Every year. --Jim Broede
