Give me socialism. Run properly.

I’m for socialism. In part, because I want basic services provided without profit. Merely for the common good. That can be achieved through the socialist system. If run properly. Maybe by the same people that run private businesses efficiently. With the profit motive in mind. I’d recruit these managers to run virtually the same sort of businesses in the public sector. But without profit. I’m for socialized medicine, for instance. Maybe even a single payer system. Getting rid of the profiteering middle men.  It’s done now with Medicare. An effective system for providing health insurance. With low administrative overhead. Much lower than the services provided by private insurers. We have to start taking profit out of the mix. In order to provide affordable service/care for everyone. Not just for the wealthy. In some circles, socialism has a bad name. Because it wasn’t run properly. But done the right way, socialism can work. Even capitalism can work. If done in a decent and humane manner. If one finds ways to rein in excessive  profits. If that isn't done, the end result is what we have in most capitalist countries. An ever-widening gap between the rich (the profiteers) and the poor. Socialism has the potential to narrow that gap. Again, if run properly. –Jim Broede
