More time to savor loving instincts
Not sure that novelist and poet D. H. Lawrence was the best of lovers. Probably was far from it. Despite his reputation as the guru of love. He even called himself the priest of love. And his writing reflected love. Beautiful love. But in actual practice, I have to wonder. Because maybe Lawrence didn’t know how to take care of himself. Especially physically. He didn’t get adequate rest. Didn’t get adequate treatment when he was sick. Especially in the last 10 years of his life. Little wonder that Lawrence became ill-tempered. Wrote off friends. Had terrible quarrels with his wife Frieda. Lawrence put too much pressure on himself. To make life too much work. Maybe even some of his writing was far too taxing on his mental and physical constitution. Maybe Lawrence should have slowed down. And taken better care of himself. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. Maybe he would have lived longer. And had more time to savor his loving instincts. –Jim Broede
