Funny thing. I could be on friendly terms with people with whom I disagree. On all sorts of issues. Ideological and otherwise. Even moral issues. I wonder if that makes me strange. I don't require a friend to think like me, or to even share the same values. --Jim Broede

I agree. Everyone else doesn't have to think exactly like I think for me to want to get to know them. Learning what they think/feel/believe about their core beliefs won't negate my core beliefs.
Ultimately, though, does it really hurt (in a mutually agreed upon give-and-take) to have your beliefs probed and challenged?
I don't think it does.
