We've learned our lesson.

For a long, long time our national shame was slavery and the denial of basic human and civil rights to people of color. Finally, we are making big strides, big amends. Correcting the wrongs of the past. Even electing a black president. Something that not very long ago seemed impossible. We Americans have tended to turn a blind eye to some of our most grievous wrongs. Like the way we privileged whites have been racists for almost all of our long history. Thank heavens for the new and upcoming young generation. They played a big role in getting Barack Obama elected. And that will rid us finally of our greatest shame of the 21st century. The shame of electing George Bush to two terms as president. Indeed, the most gawd-awful president we ever had. Despicible. A disgrace. It may take decades to correct all the wrongs wrought by the Bush administration and his Republican cohorts. But hey, I'm getting comfort and solace from all this. Bush was so bad that he made us see the light. Yes, I'm expecting something good to spring from the mess that Bush has left. We've learned our lesson. Never again will we allow it to happen. --Jim Broede

Yours is a prime example of how people perpetuate racism, for gain. (see, how you now have at least 1 response?) And, statements like these DO tend to make others believe there is a latent racism in the "messenger", especially when repeated over and over.

Barack Obama was not elected to right a wrong. That, in itself, would be racist. He was elected because he presented that he is worthy of being President.

My Son did not vote for him, because he is black. Neither did any of his friends. Your "WE" does not include me, or anyone I know.

From my perspective, Maebee, Obama was elected to right many, many wrongs. To finally bring us universal health care, to narrow the gap between the rich and poor, to bring our troops home from Iraq, and maybe from Afghanistan, too, and to bring us closer to ending the longtime racial divide in America. --Jim

As Mallard Fillmore said today:
"President Obama will fix the economy... end terrorism...cure the common cold...walk on water...heal the sick...and suspend all laws of physics that are inconvenient or annoying.....

and, if these things don't come to pass....

it will be because we're such a racist nation.©

As for the rest....we'll see...

Let me clarify one thing, that could be taken 2 ways. My Son and I DID and DO support President-elect Obama, but not because he is black.

And I support Obama for many, many, many reasons. And one of the reasons is because of his blackness, his black experience. It has helped make him what he is. A very understanding and compassionate man. And a very forgiving man. He has learned to cope with racism in a positive way. Maybe that is what helped get him elected. I have a very good feeling about this man. Goes to show that good can spring from a longtime evil environment in American society. --Jim
