Thoughts about soldiers...and war.

One thing about war. If we're gonna have war, we need soldiers willing to fight. To go into combat. To kill. And to risk being killed. Soldiers who believe in the cause, I suppose. Or who are willing mercenaries. And fight wars for money. For a paycheck. And maybe for a sense of adventure and risk. And yes, even glamour. Some people go to war because it's the manly and glamourous thing to do. I suppose that if war is necessary, it's good to have volunteer soldiers. Trained killers. Willing to follow orders. Even if it means dying. For the country. For the cause. --Jim Broede

Jim---The downturn in the economy and announced pending pull-out of out troops in Iraq appears to have carried through to military enlistment/reenlistment bonuses. I read that they are not as lucrative as they were this time last year.

I'm no fan of armies or warfare...but...I do not care to read phrases like "Trained killers" to describe our troops. In my opinion...They are given the training necessary to allow them the opportunity to survive in combat.

Most also receive training in other areas that might enable them to earn money during peace time and time served enables them to qualify for education under the GI Bill.
