A glut of unreasonable politicos.

I never had difficuty writing a fair and balanced political news story. I kept my biases out of those stories. But when I wrote a column, I let my bias flow freely. Just as I do in my personal blog. No reason to maintain neutrality here. As a newspaper reporter, I tried diligently to be fair. To present all sides of an issue. Generally, I think my readers thought I was fair. Extraordinarily fair. Of course, political partisans often wanted me to be more fair to their side than to the other side. That's the nature of politics. But the nature of the news business should be fairness. Not biased reporting. We don't have much of that anymore. The news business has changed. Take Fox News , for instance. It's about as partisan as partisan can be. That ain't right and proper. It's all right for pundits on talk shows to be biased. To choose up sides. But the news accounts -- well, they really should be fair and balanced. And just calling them that, as Fox News does, doesn't mean that they are. I don't particularly like partisan politics. But it's there. It exists. And I can be as partisan as anyone. But still, when I am partisan, I try to be reasonably fair. If I were in Congress, I'd be willing to compromise. For the sake of fairness. But hey, the other side had better be fair, too. It's called give and take. If the other side wants nothing but take and no give -- well, I can play that game, too. But there's nothing wrong with a win-win scenario. When both sides get some, but not all, of what they want. That's exactly what we need in the new Congress. For the sake of the American nation. For the sake of the common good. But we ain't gonna get it. Because we have a glut of unreasonable politicos in Congress. --Jim Broede
