Goes to show it can work.

Yes, I think we human beings have to be regulated. To some extent, certainly. We can't be allowed to have complete freedom. Maybe that's a reason why we need government. We need regulations. Laws. Rules. If we were given free rein, some of us would exploit others. Be unfair. So when I see extreme libertarians, I have to wonder. Are they living in the real world? They want government to get off their backs. And for what purpose? Often, it's to exploit the environment. To do as they damn well please. Even if it's to the detriment of the common good. They scream: No new taxes. No new taxes. No new taxes. In fact, they'd rather have no taxes at all. But we need taxes. To finance government. And to bring about the common good. Maybe I don't like it. Maybe I'd like to keep all of my money. And not give away a single penny. But that's being selfish. It ain't serving the common good. Unfortunately, I have to do many things that I don't particularly like. I even have to be relatively nice to people that I don't like. Yes, it's called tolerance. Civility. Fairness. I have to compromise. Make concessions. If we had a politic in which that was possible, it'd be helpful. We'd probably get along much better. But in the USA, we've become polarized. Split. Divided. Everybody wants his own way. And believe me, it ain't gonna happen. But still, we try to make it happen. Often, by going to war. By becoming violent. When really, we could have sat down and talked to each other. Reasonably. And resolve our differences. It happens occasionally. Goes to show that it can work. --Jim Broede
