The magnificence of walking.
Imagine walking from one end of town to another. On sidewalks. Probably won’t happen any more in most American cities. But here in Carbonia in Sardinia I will be able to accomplish such an endeavor. Sidewalks of one kind or another lead everywhere. Cobblestone. Decorative bricks. Smooth tiles. Bituminous pavement. The pedestrian is king in this city. I haven’t found such a nice network of sidewalks since I grew up in a town of 10,000 in southeast Wisconsin. We walked everywhere. Even to school. I never rode a bus to school. And I walked home for lunch, when we had an hour and 20 minute noon-time break. Anyway, I love to walk. To explore Carbonia on foot. Never know what I’m gonna find around the next corner. That’s the magnificence of walking. –Jim Broede
