It helps to speak the language.
I read a column in the New York Times today about the terms bi-linqual and tri-linqual. Applying to people who can speak two or three languages. So the question was asked, what does one call someone who speaks only one language? And the answer was: An American. Yes, that’s a sad fact. And I’m one of the sad examples. I’ve learned a smattering of French and German and a few words of Italian. But that’s about it. To really converse, I have to speak my native English. I suppose we Americans don’t use a second language because it’s relatively easy getting by with English. No matter where we go. Even to foreign countries. Because English is spoken widely around the world. At the moment, I’m trying to learn Italian. Now that I’m living in Italy. But it’s a little too easy getting by with my English. Because my Italian girlfriend speaks fluent English. But I feel an obligation to learn Italian. Yes, when in Italy, do as the Italians. Speak the language. It sure helps if one wants to blend in. –Jim Broede
