Taking my time at Sant' Antioco.
Sant’ Antioco. It’s no ordinary place. A city in Sardinia. With a history dating to the 8th century BC. When the city was known as Solki. Settled by the Phoenicians. I was there the other night. Arriving at dusk. To catch my first glimpse for an hour or two. I’ll return again and again and again. To explore the ancient ruins. To get a feel what it must have been like to live there 2,800 years ago. I walked slowly through the modern-say version of the city. With 11,730 inhabitants. About one-third the size of Carbonia, 30 kilometers away, where I’m spending the winter. Carbonia was founded in 1938. By Mussolini. Antioco, on the other hand, has a longer and far more spectacular history. The city derives its name from St. Antiochus, evangelizer of the area who was martyred in 125 AD. That’s another thing I’ve noticed. Virtually all Catholic saints seem to have been martyrs. Personally, I don’t wanna die for my faith. I prefer living for it. So I can take my time and explore Sant’ Antioco to the fullest. –Jim Broede
