I kid you not. Italy’s good and bad politicians are identifiable. Merely by their looks. I can tell. Without even listening. Just by looking into their faces. The bad ones look bad. Silvio Berlusconi, for instance. He looks like a shyster. A villain. Dishonest. Shifty eyes. Plastered down black hair. Probably a toupee. I hear what he has to say. The tone of his voice. Sounds phony. I read the translations. He’s a conservative. I link conservatives with bad. I can spot a liberal. At a glance. They look kindly. Trustworthy. Honest. That includes the secretary of the Italian communist party. And the governor of Puglia. The young mayor of Florence, too. Meanwhile, I’ve never seen a political ally of Berlusconi’s that I like. They all look evil. But then, I’ve never found an American Republican that I like. They all look homely. And like criminals. Maybe I lack objectivity and fairness when it comes to the world of politics. –Jim Broede
