Putting friend ahead of country.
Stumbled across a thoughtful and inspiring quote from E. M. Forster, the English writer/novelist: ‘If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country.’ Yes, I share Forster’s view. So much easier to swear allegiance to a true friend than to a country. Quite a difference between a friend and a political entity. I could think of 100 reasons to betray my country. But not a single valid reason to betray my friend. Especially if that friend were my precious true love. Thing is, though, I’d probably not betray my country. I’d merely renounce it. And leave. Walk away. Start a new life elsewhere. I’d try to stick by my friend forever. –Jim Broede
