Savoring a lingering winter.

The spring weather pattern in Minnesota. I like it. Because it’s weird. Different. Most springs by this time we’ve tasted some 60s and 70s. Not many. A few. Maybe even an 80. But here it is, April 9. And so far this spring we’ve had only one day in the 50s. The day I returned from Italy. March 30.  It’s been cooler than normal. Cloudy days, too. And damp. Cold rain. Mixed with snow flurries. The lake is still frozen. With no sign of opening soon. Patches of snow on the ground. Last year, the lake opened in mid-March. Close to record early. This year, maybe record late. The forecast is for heavy snow. On Wednesday. Maybe a foot in western Minnesota.  I’d just as soon see the snow. Knowing it won’t last long.  Haven’t seen a big snowstorm for several winters. Now that I spend fall and winter in Italy. Year-round residents of Minnesota may be weary of it all. Not me. Instead, an opportunity to savor a lingering winter. Spring will arrive in good nature time. I can wait. Patiently.  –Jim Broede
