The matter of loyalty.
I’m no super patriot. No desire to swear unswerving allegiance to my
country. Or any country. I ain’t gonna die for my country. If I can help it.
But I’m a loyal fellow. When it comes to my dearest friends. I’d stick by them. Unconditionally. That especially
goes for my true love. But my country is another thing. Merely a country. For
me, it’d be easier to abandon my country than abandon a best friend. My
country is ruled primarily by politics. Which can be downright dirty. And
obscene. If I had been a German during the Third Reich, I could easily have
betrayed my country. Because Deutschland had gone terribly awry. In
mean-spirited and murderous ways. No sense in remaining loyal under those circumstances.
I would be in no mood for forgiveness. However, I’m fully capable of forgiving
my best friend. For all sorts of indiscretions and wrongdoings. –Jim Broede
