Indeed, I am fortunate. For having been born. A white male. That
makes me privileged. At least, here in the USA. More privileged than if I had
been black or an immigrant or a woman. I would not have had the same job and
educational opportunities – had I not been a white male. I sort of benefitted from
discrimination against others. I concede, it wasn’t fair. I gave it little thought.
At the time. But now I recognize. We white males have been too privileged. In the
social, political and economic order. Less so now than it used to be. Which
means the trend is to take away some of the white male privilege. Yes, it’s about
time. But I sense that many white males desperately want to retain their privilege.
Especially in the political world and in positions of power. As for me, I’m for correcting the wrongs of the
past. After all, it’s the right thing to do. --Jim Broede
