I'd roll out a red carpet.

My gawd. What is America coming to? In Arizona, there's legislation about to be adopted requiring anybody who looks like an immigrant to carry papers. Proving that he/she is here legally. Sort of like what the Nazis did to the Jews. They had to carry identification papers. At all times. We Americans have this mania that we are being invaded by illegal immigrants. We even want to build a high fence topped with barbed wire along the USA-Mexican border. Yes, the equivalent of the Berlin Wall. To make it more difficult for Mexicans to cross over. The way I look at it, if someone is here illegally, they'll be discovered sooner or later. Meanwhile, it's no big deal. Let 'em stay. Chances are 99 percent of 'em came here for a better life. I suspect that my paternal German-born grandfather sneaked in to the USA illegally around 1900. And I figure, all the more power to him. Because he was in search of the good life. The same as some Hispanics. Instead of a fence along our borders, I'd roll out a red carpet. --Jim Broede

What you don't consider is that the population of the United States has, at least, quadrupled since 1900. The U.S. will run out of room, as well as resources. Consider these numbers:

Let's look at the big picture. The world's population. Let's not be parochial. We must take gigantic steps, giantic measures, to bring the population of planet Earth under control. The so-called immigration problem is trivial stuff. We need a worldwide approach to population control. --Jim

Pardon me, but your comments were on the illegal immigrant situation in the USA, not world population control.

No, you ain't pardoned. You expanded the discussion by bringing up the population issue in your comment. And I chose to put it into an even bigger context. --Jim

I see a link between immigration issues and world population control. Don't you? Maybe it would help if we dispersed the population. Moving people about. To make for more accommodating situations. Or by imposing birth control measures. Similar to what's happening in China. --Jim

I like the notion in which there's a world without borders. --Jim

No, I don't see a link, as far as the burden illegal immigrants put on the US system. The majority of illegals either walk or drive into the country, not fly thousands of miles. Shal we start transporting them to other countries? Will the other countries accept them?

The birth control measures you suggest would have to be imposed on the immigrants themselves, minorities, and the poorer classes, who have the highest birthrates. Babies are being produced so the parents can reap the benefits the US provides to these children.

The non-communist countries in the world do not have borders. Try visiting a communist country, and you'll see.

If there were birth control measures, they should apply to everyone. Rich and poor alike. Shouldn't they? --Jim

I want to visit Cuba. It ain't Cuba keeping me out. It's my own country, the USA, that tells me I can't go. --Jim

I'm for accepting the so-called illegal immigrants. Let's find ways to make 'em legal. --Jim

Well, sure! But, how many middle/upper-class families do you know, who have a houseful of kids? I know of many women and men who have many children with several different partners, without marrying any of them. Why bother? It is more profitable to not do it. I don't know if you know or not, but birth control is available free-of-charge to the needy. The problem is, they have to use it. They choose not to.

By the way, I brought up the population issue because that is a huge difference from when you claim your ancestor sneaked in. People are sneaking in at the rate of thousands per day, and Arizona is faced with over 460,000 illegal immigrants. We just do not have the room or resources anymore. The illegals are NOT contributing to the economy-just taking advantage of it.

Legal immigrants are required, by law, to have their green card on them at all times. If the legal immigrants have a problem with being checked, maybe they should take it up with the illegals.

In answer to your comment on finding "ways to make 'em legal"-there already are. It is a clear and easy process, through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

If we are gonna have birth control, it has to be required. Not optional. For everyone. It may come down to that some day. --Jim

I want to make it even easier than easy. --Jim

I think KS agreed with you on the birth control. I got out of it that middle/upper class families already practice sensible birth control, so it would be no big deal to them.

As for Cuba, we have had an embargo against them since the 60s, for very good reasons. Read up on it.

I'm with him/her-the ILLEGAL immigrants are sucking our welfare system dry. That is the reason American citizens want something done about it. I do not pay my taxes, to take care of another country's citizens. We are divided into countries, states, counties, and cities for a reason. There is no way that one entity can manage, or supervise the entire globe.

I'm for lifting the embargo on Cuba. There's no valid reason for the embargo. It's mean-spirited. --Jim

I'm for granting amnesty to all of the illegal immigrants. Let's welcome them with open arms. That's the kind of spirit I want to see in America. Let's welcome the downtrodden. I'm for caring and kindness. Some of you are so hard-hearted. --Jim

Considering the Cuban embargo, it was imposed on Cuba, when they confiscated and redistributed property and companies from US citizens. It was strengthened in 1992,1996, and 1999, because of the abuses of human right. You think this is OK? Not a valid reason?

You also think it is OK, for these millions of people to come to our country, reap the benefits of our system, without contributing to it, at the expense of our own taxpaying, law-abiding citizens? THAT is not hard-hearted?

I cannot believe these are your true feelings. I have to believe you are saying these things just to cause a stir, or get responses. "caring and kindness"? What a contradiction you are. You remind me of Rush Limbaugh and others who just talk garbage to get an audience.

Castro certainly is a lot better for Cuba than what Cuba had before him -- Bautista, a greedy capitalist dictator. Castro's emphasis has been on the common good. Rather than on the good of the few elite. Cuba has very good educational and health care systems. Give Castro credit. He doesn't dance to the tune of the USA. --Jim

And I think illegal immigrants are serving our system. By filling jobs that nobody else wants. --Jim

You are the one that's ill-informed. I tend to like illegal immigrants. Every illegal immigrant that I've known has been a nice guy/gal. I have yet to meet an illegal immigrant that I didn't like. Therefore, I think we need more illegal immigrants. Yes, more likeable people in the USA. Meanwhile, there are some longtime citizens of the USA that I don't particularly like. Such as members of the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party. Of course, they don't like me either. Anyway, I'd rather live next door to an illegal immigrant than to a lunatic. --Jim
