The city of empty balconies.

I see so very many balconies in Carbonia in Sardinia. Virtually any respectable apartment building has balconies. But oddly in my walks around town, I rarely see anyone on the balconies. Of course, it’s winter. But in Sardinia, I don’t really consider winter to be winter. It’s more like a Minnesota spring. Many days are in the 60s, or even 70s. And sunny. Perfect weather to be on a balcony. At least from my biased perspective. But maybe for Sardinians, this is cool weather. Because I see them walking around all bundled up. In thick coats. With hoods. With scarves. And knit stocking caps. By the time I leave in March, the weather will be warmer. More like a Minnesota summer. Maybe that’s when the Sardinians take to their balconies. We’ll see. –Jim Broede
