Safe-driving may be risky in Italy.

I'm wondering if there's such a thing as a traffic cop in Sardinia. Certainly there are no highway patrol officers. Once on the open road, Sardinians drive with wild if not reckless abandon. Fast and faster. I try to obey the speed limits. And that seems to annoy Italians. They ride on my tail, and pass me, even on hairpin curves. Zoom. Like a flash of light. Generally, I'm supposed to be limited to 80 kilometers an hour on the open road. Some of these vehicles must be passing me at 150-kilometers an hour. I lose sight of 'em in a few seconds. And this is on well-posted roads. With ample warnings of electronic surveillance. I'm assuming that Italians know that these warnings are bogus. There ain't a traffic cop to be found anywhere. I have yet to see anyone pulled over and being ticketed. But still, I'm gonna play it safe. Unfortunately, that may not be safe enough. I could get bumped. For going too slow to suit the guy/gal behind me. --Jim Broede
