By being more observant.

Just read an essay. ‘I’m listening as hard as I can.’ By a deaf woman. Terry Galloway. She’s compensated for her handicap. By listening better than most of us. By observing. Watching. Facial expressions. Body postures. Gestures. All sorts of things. She reads lips, too. Things we all could do. But don’t. To make for better listening. That’s what I do when in Italy. Because I don’t speak much Italian. Yet. So I find myself doing what Galloway does. Observing an animated conversation. Making educated guesses about what’s being said. And often, I’m on target. It’s as if I’m deaf. But still able to comprehend. By being more observant. –Jim Broede
